Office of Community Revitalization & Local Government Support
This deputate facilitates the revitalization of communities by promoting policies and initiatives that foster a climate of environmentally sound, sustained economic growth - supporting the vision that environmental challenges can and should produce economic opportunities for all of Pennsylvania.
This purpose is achieved through the following programs -
Brownfield Redevelopment
Brownfield Redevelopment is a combined effort of our Land Recycling Program and our Brownfield Action Team (BAT) and other supporting programs. The Land Recycling Program, Pennsylvania’ voluntary cleanup program (VCP), encourages the voluntary cleanup and reuse of contaminated commercial and industrial sites by providing uniform cleanup standards, liability relief, standardized reviews and time limits, and financial assistance. BAT is responsible for expediting the remediation, reclamation, reuse and redevelopment of brownfields and abandoned mine lands for locally identified high priority redevelopment and reuse projects.
Economic Development Assistance
Economic Development Assistance creates effective partnerships with local municipalities, municipal associations, economic and industrial development associations, and the business community facilitates economic development activities. Furthermore, we partner with the Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED), the Governor’s Office and other relevant state agencies and departments to provide needed answers and assets for economic development. By promoting Commonwealth policies and initiatives, this Office fosters a climate of economic growth while balancing sensitive environmental issues.
Local Government Support
Local Government Support Liaisons (LGLs) serve all of Pennsylvania as regional ombudsmen for local and county government officials, their associations as well as businesses and economic development agencies. The LGLs foster innovative problem solving to best support and streamline economic development projects and ensure that policy matters and decisions affecting local governments and economic development authorities are coordinated and implemented consistently throughout the Department.
Land Use
DEP will promote sound
land use planning and development by considering comprehensive plans and generally consistent zoning ordinances in DEP’s decision making process for grants and funding decisions related to facilities and infrastructure.
